Moritz Moszkowski was born 1854 in the Polish town Breslau which in the middle of the 19th century was part of Prussia. He studied in Berlin and in 1897 moved to Paris. He is well known as an exceptional concert pianist and as the compser of many little piano pieces called in German "Salonmusik". Guitarre is one of two piano pieces published in 1888. The composer himself wrote an arrangement for cello and piano. Better known is an arrangement of the piece which Pablo de Sarasate made in cooperation with the composer for violin and piano.
