This trio sonata is one of many that Georg Philipp Telemann wrote for different combinations of instruments. It definitely belongs among those that deserve special attention. Both outer movements, which are very lively and fast indeed, show a great master at play, with a constant barrage of interchanging imitations and passages running in parallel thirds and sixths. The slow movement imparts a very expressive vocal quality which, while contrasting in atmosphere, applies the same compositional techniques. The Sonata seems to be especially well suited for the sonority of a cello trio. The original score calls for two violins (or flute and violin) and figured bass. -Valter Dešpalj
