Bargiel was the half brother of Clara
Schumann, who with her husband Robert Schumann arranged for the
publication of some of Bargiel's early works. While he did not compose a
large body of works, his music demonstrates a fine tonal palette and
solid musical craftsmanship. Later in life, Bargiel and Brahms worked
together as co-editors of the complete editions of Schumann’s and
Chopin’s works. The Adagio has been edited by Charles Wendt, Professor Emeritus at the University of Iowa School of Music.
