After returning to Europe from a tour of America, Belgian violinist and composer Henri Vieuxtemps composed a showpiece for violin and piano based on the American folk tune Yankee Doodle for his next American tour in 1844.  Vieuxtemps used traditional dance forms for the variations, including a Russian dance, a Polka, and an American country dance.  So ecstatically was this work received by American audiences, that they demanded he play the work at every concert.
