
Steven Staryk
The title "King of Concertmasters," was bestowed by "The Strad" upon Steven Staryk who has been concertmaster of four of the world's major orchestras: the Royal Philharmonic of London, the Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, the Chicago Symphony (by age 35), and the Toronto Symphony - unprecedented achievement. Appointed as the youngest concertmaster (1956) of the Royal Philharmonic at age 24 by Sir Thomas Beecham, the Canadian-born violinist has since toured Europe, the Far East, and North America as a soloist and as a founding member of Quartet Canada. He has served on the jury of many prestigious competitions including the Tchaikovsky International. More than 190 entries in the Creighton violin discography rank him among the world's most prolific recording violinists. Mr. Staryk has held professorships at nine universities and conservatories in Europe, the United States, and Canada and is listed in numerous international publications. He joined the University of Washington faculty in 1987 as Chair of the String Division of the School of Music. Professor Staryk received "The distinguished Teaching Award," the first ever awarded to a professor in the University of Washington's School of Music.Mr. Staryk maintains a website at www.starykanthology.ca.
