Ruggiero Leoncavallo is a rather obscure composer. Though he wrote some substantial compositions in the area of opera during his lifetime, very little of that remains in the current repertory today.
Leoncavallo experienced significant obstacles in his efforts to break into the professional opera scene, though he finally had enormous success in 1892 with his two-act work Pagliacci. Today. it is one of the most popular works in the repertory, having appeared as number 20 on the Operabase list of the most-performed operas worldwide. However, it is considered his only work in standard musical literture.
Leoncavallo also composed songs and some instrumental works, such as the Serenade arranged below by Valter Dešpalj.
